After watching the documentary King of Kong: A Fist Full of
Quarters, I’m sure we all developed a distasteful attitude towards the
conceited antagonist of the film, Billy Mitchell. Therefore, I’ve decided to
post a bizarre blog on this bizarre character. After four years from the
release of the King of Kong documentary, Billy Mitchell decided to open his own
King of Kong arcade. This arcade can be found 2 hours away from Gainesville!
It’s located in the Orlando airport which is a pretty convenient location considering thousands of potential gamers pass by every day. However, what I find
interesting is that there is no Donkey Kong machine in this King of Kong
arcade!
There is no absolute reason why the machine is absent, but
articles suggest that Billy does not want to go through the embarrassment of
someone beating his score on the machine in his own arcade. People believe that
his character still has not changed since the time he avoided playing
head-to-head against Steve Weibes at Funspot. This brings me to view Billy
Mitchell’s character through a psychological perspective. The fact that many
gamers tend to fall into this winning-obsessed culture shows that a game means
much more to them. Many gamers fall into this mindset where they become
obsessed with winning and become scared of losing. There are even many
incidences in today’s news that reveal athletes cheating in their games by
using illegal performance-enhancing drugs. This winning-obsessed culture is on
the rise because people are becoming infatuated with winning. Through the
documentary and through this new Donkey Kong-free arcade, we can see that Billy
Mitchell is a little fond of superiority. Do you think he believes in the
phrase “It’s not whether you win or lose, but how you played the game that
matters”?
