My eyes have been truly opened to this notion of videogames
becoming a sport. The “Twin Galaxies” company developed by an old time video
game guru proves the growth of videogames. They cannot just be looked at for
enjoyment purposes. These live competitions held at the arcade create pressure
and at times, stress for each competitor. Speaking of stress, one of the Donkey
Kong champions, Steve Wiebe, takes us through his ups and downs of completing
this game.
In this documentary, I found it interesting that the
producers focused in on Steve Wiebe and not Billy Mitchell. They portrayed
Mitchell’s character as demeaning and arrogant. Is he really like that? One can
only tell from true knowledge. Regardless, the life of a video game player
requires a creative mind. Steve Wiebe used mathematics and physics to calculate
and time out certain portions of this game. Therefore, the stereotype of the
nerdy, secluded video gamer has been outdated.
Speaking in terms of productivity, videogames are actually
quite productive today. The actual game may not be productive, but the video
game industry is. The marketing for videogames is world known. They promote
different games through apparel, for example, shirts, pants, and online
clothing. In addition, the “marketplace” on Xbox allows a person to buy
numerous items or tokens towards a specific game. A new perk to Xbox is the
ability for gamers around the country to communicate over a microphone during
the game. This capability connects all of us, allowing us to learn and explore
the video game “world.” This world is an alternate reality for most gamers. For
me, I am looking forward to more experiences in this “realm.”
